Uncharted: The Lost Legacy really brought home to me how tired I am of open-world games. I love the Assassin's Creed series, I love Red Dead Redemption, but I think I'm suffering a sort of open-world fatigue; I'm not really getting anywhere with Horizon Zero Dawn, even though it's staggeringly beautiful, because I'm just exhausted by how much there is to do. It felt so good to pick up Lost Legacy and play through a fast-moving game where you're constantly driving things forward.

One of the many reasons I am looking forward intensely to Danganronpa V3's release at the end of the month. Dangan Ronpa games are ALL PLOT, ALL THE TIME and it's great.

I'm feeling more generous towards Final Fantasy XV than I am towards most open-world games at the moment, because that game isn't really about the plot; it's a game about arsing around with your friends. Of course you should waste time on stupid sidequests; wasting time with people you care about is important!

Wait, maybe the problem isn't open-world games; maybe the problem is games where the protagonist is alone. In Lost Legacy, you spend most of the time hanging out with Nadine; in Final Fantasy XV, you've got three pals with you. I just want constant dialogue! And that's just not something you get in, for example, the Assassin's Creed games. (As much as I love Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, I'm sad that it went, 'Twin protagonists! You can choose which one to play! But the other twin doesn't tag along with you, sorry.' I want Evie and Jacob to snipe at each other while I'm running around London!)


...okay, I wrote the above in part because I was dithering on whether to play Infamous: Second Son, as a means of passing the time before Danganronpa V3's release. On the one hand, it had good reviews and my housemate had it, so it would cost me nothing to try it out. On the other, I was so tired of open-world games, and I'd tried the original Infamous once and hated it instantly.

I needn't have worried. I came to love Infamous: Second Son just as instantly as I'd come to hate Infamous. Turns out that this game is all about siblings who don't really get along but love each other nonetheless, i.e. my ultimate weakness. Almost at the very start of the game (twelve minutes into this walkthrough video), there was the perfect cutscene, cramming about six things I love into fifty seconds, after the protagonist Delsin got extremely stigmatised superpowers.

And it's so fun to play! Delsin can run so fast and can jump so high and has assorted zooming-and-hovering skills, so you can fly from building to building! He sometimes gives a little giddy laugh as he shoots up into the sky, and it's really endearing. It does suffer a little from Videogame Morality, where it's morally fine to kill the occasional civilian so long as you make up for it by stopping some drug dealers later, but I'm not taking it too seriously. I'm pretty used to suspending my moral disbelief in videogames.

This game further supports my 'maybe the issue is a lack of company in open worlds rather than open worlds in themselves' theory, because Delsin and his brother occasionally have little sarcastic phone conversations while you're running around the city, and it's great.

I'm only two hours into the game, so it's possible my opinion will change, but they have been a thoroughly enjoyable two hours.

The surviving members of Linkin Park have put out an official music video for 'One More Light' in memory of Chester, and noooooooooooo I can't handle this. It's a beautiful video, and in a way it's cathartic, and I'm glad to know they've been doing something creative to work through the pain, but also I sobbed so hard while watching this that my chest physically hurt afterwards. These poor guys. I wish I could hug all of them.

Mike did a radio interview as well, and it's really good to hear from him, but also there's a part where his voice starts to get unsteady and it's absolutely unbearable. I think I'm torn at the moment between 'it's really good to hear from the guys and know they're still around and haven't just stopped functioning' and 'I've spent so much time worrying about the pain they're in, and now that pain is even more real because I can see and hear it'.

Linkin Park is still my primary fandom, which means that I've been thinking about this most of the day, every day, for two solid months. It's easier now, but it's still a bit miserable. I'm desperately awaiting the new Dangan Ronpa game's release, hoping it will successfully distract me. Please just let me worry about fictional deaths for a while. No more getting invested in real people. I've learnt my lesson, I swear.

This whole thing has given me a little more faith in humanity, at least. I've seen so much kindness, so many complete strangers reaching out to each other, offering love and support to Chester's friends and fans and family. At heart, people really want to help those in pain.


On a lighter note, here are a couple of incredible things I have seen recently:

- this reinterpretation of High School Musical's 'Get Your Head in the Game'. (This link is actually to a reblog on the Tumblr account I secretly have, but I wouldn't recommend following it, because it's nothing but sobbing uncontrollably over Linkin Park. This blog is still the place I actually talk about things. Tumblr doesn't really suit me.)

- the trailer for American Vandal. Rei and I booted up Netflix, saw the description for this show, went '???????????????????' and had to watch the trailer. We're afraid to watch the show itself in case it doesn't live up to the trailer's promise.

V&A, tamara

Today I went to the V&A,to see tamara, whom I had not seen in a while.


We took a tour that was especially for London Design Festival, so it took in several different installations, some of which are in conversation/reaction to pieces in the Museum. And because there were several different ones in different places and themes, the tour - and we - went over a wide range of the museum, from the Raphael galleries (where there were dancing robots!) to the glass galleries, the ceramics, furniture, via a gallery of paintings to see tapestries and a reaction to the tapestries, and to an opera display, and an installation of blue light and red light, so many things! It was about an hour and a half and had a lot of walking and climbing stairs and so on. "My fitbit will be happy", Tamara said.And so it was.
There were two guides, the one we got was called Dan Nuvo, (like the art, he said). He pinged gay (and then he made a skipping leg day joke and I was sure) and later in the Ceramics gallery he pointed out a display of a rainbow of glazes that was installed by a gay man, and said that he did the LGBT tour in the V&A, on the last Saturday of the Month at four, Derek do you want to go?

Anyway, the museum is huge and it was nice to see so much of it. And it was good to see tamara and do an thing with her.
We exited through Exhibition Road, there is a new! Shiny! entrance there that I had not seen before . I came in through the Cromwell road entrance. Then made her come and find me under the Chihuli chandelier.

After, we travelled together to Liverpool Street station, and met Nicole (or possibly another name, I am bad at names). She's doing comms for the concom. She was friendly and polite. Apparently she had slightly alarmed some police officers earlier by being friendly and polite at them. People don't seem to understand that in a big crowded city, ignoring people is the best way one can give them space.

On Saturday I went out to see "God's Own Country" which is also known around these parts as Brokeback Yorkshire. (These parts being both friends' brains and the internet).

I twote about it a couple of times after seeing it mentioned and seeing the trailer, and the director of the film and the producer of the film have both retweeted me.

There was much Yorkshire, and [personal profile] apiphile said it was "graphically farming and graphically gay" which is accurate.

(those mean there are scenes with dead animals in them, and there are scenes with pretty graphic gay sex)

I went to see Much Ado About Nothing at the Globe with Random, because she had a spare ticket. We had awful seats and then realised that where we were sitting was actually a continuation of the bench all the way to the wall, and the actual marked seats had a better view - we moved to the actual seats during the interval.
I liked the Beatrice, she was charming and funny. I also liked the bright costumes.

(I think I nodded off at one point, so still low energy/ not enough stamina for an play, but if I'm sitting down I can just do that and not be in anyone's way - and then I wake up and keep watching, I don't get the huge energyy drop from trying to stay standing up)

(Today I looked at the BBC iplayer website, and BBC Alba had Oran Na Mara/Song of the Sea - that beautiful animated film - available. But it is dubbed in language I do not understand - Scottich Gaelic, perhaps? and no English subtitles, either.
It's still very pretty.

I went looking through the iplayer films and they had Pedro Almodovar's 'I'm So Excited' Which is on an airplane that has a fault in its landing gear so instead of flying to Mexico is circling Toledo, waiting to get a place to land. It is full of sex and alcohol and drugs, some - especially the drugs - non-consensually, and it is very very silly. Everyone on economy is given 'muscle relaxants' and is fully asleep for the entire flight, for example. This is very very silly and also unethical and impossible. They all wake up fine for the landing and evacuation. This is also impossible. It's taking itself about as seriously as a eurovision song. Once I totally accepted that mindset, I enjoyed it. (Also there is a suicide attempt that is averted - person is about to, phone rings, they don't - but they are shown walking onto an ambulance, to be hospitalised).
The mood is light, there are bright colours, cheerfulness, and a happy ending.

Went quiet for a couple of weeks on here! I still have the insatiable need to talk non-stop on the Internet; it's just that lately I've been doing a lot of my talking in, er, Linkin Park fan communities. I'll get back to normal around here eventually. (Danganronpa V3 is out at last in a couple of weeks, so I probably won't be able to shut up about that. Brace yourself.)

I've been playing Telltale's Walking Dead game, and it is EXTREMELY STRESSFUL. The zombies aren't scary; the fact that you're constantly having high-pressure conversations and having to make quick decisions about what to say is terrifying. I'm glad Life Is Strange was the first game in this vein I played; your time-travel powers mean you have as much time as you like to make decisions, so it eases you into the choice-based episodic genre gently.

Clementine is very sweet. I'm not sure yet whether she feels like a fleshed-out character to me. She's shy and quiet, which I suppose naturally means it'll take a while for me to feel that I know her. (I'm most of the way through Episode Two.)

One moment that did strike me, with regard to Clementine's characterisation: I told a guy that I was a neighbour looking after her, because it sounded better than 'I'm just some dude who escaped being sent to prison and stumbled across this kid,' and he asked Clementine whether she knew me, and she said yes! Only eight years old and already lying to protect me. I'm so proud.

I really like the way she's latched on to Lee, and she'll look to him for permission if anyone else offers her something. I was so pleased when he hugged her in Episode Two, after the traumatic meat locker incident. It's possible there were hugs before that, but I don't recall any. MORE HUGS.

Episode Two also let me down horrendously, though, because there's a point where you're in a barn with a cow.

Clementine: Do you want to pet the cow with me?
Lee: Nah, but you go on ahead.
